We Believe...
We Believe in the One God as He is revealed in the Bible. And this One God is the Creator of the universe who is infinite, personal, eternally existing in three persons, revealed to us in Scripture as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:1; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10; 44:6; 45:22; Matthew 28:19; John 4:24; 5:26; 1 Corinthians 8:4-6; Colossians 1:16-19)
We Believe Jesus is the Christ (Messiah), the Savior and Lord, the Son of God who is eternal. He was conceived in the flesh by the Holy Spirit, was born of the virgin Mary, and being fully God and fully man. Jesus lived a sinless life, died on a cross and was resurrected from the grave on the third day. He is alive and interceding for each of us today. A day is coming when Jesus will return as our victorious Lord and gather together His faithful followers to take them home to His heaven. (Matthew 1:23-25; John 1:1; 14:3; Acts 4:12; 1 Corinthians 15:3,4,20; Philippians 2:5-11; 1 Timothy 2:5-6; Hebrews 4:14-16; 1 Peter 2:22)
We Believe everyone who is in relationship with Jesus Christ through faith, has the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. We believe the Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit is a person, not just a mystical energy or force. His continuing work is to bring us conviction, comfort, courage and counsel. The Holy Spirit works in believers through teaching, reminding, and empowering them day by day. The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to each believer according to His will. God in His sovereignty still works in miraculous ways according to His own good will. (John 3:5-8; 14:25-26; Acts 1:8; 5:3-4; 16:7-14; 1 Corinthians 2:9-12; 3:16; 12:3-13,28-31; 13:8-11; Galatians 5:16-25; Ephesians 1:13-14; 5:18; Hebrews 2:3-4)
We Believe our salvation comes by the grace of God and through faith in Jesus Christ and cannot be earned. It is a gift of God. The price of our salvation was paid in full by the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross. He took our sins upon Himself to offer us eternal life with Him in His heaven. We must choose to accept it in order to receive it. (John 1:12; 3:16; 10:27-30; Acts 16:30-31; 20:20-21; Romans 3:28; 10:9; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Ephesians 2:8-9; Philippians 1:6)
We Believe faith in Jesus is not to be stagnant but requires expression to be genuine and vibrant. Faith is something we do talk about, but also, faith ought to be seen in how we live our lives on a daily basis.
(Matthew 7:24-27; Galatians 5:5-6; James 1:22-25; 2:14-26; 1 John 3:16-19)
We Believe baptism is by immersion. In the original Greek language of the New Testament, the term baptism is used on multiple occasions. The Greek word for baptism is βαπτίζω (baptizo), which means to dip, to plunge or submerge. We believe the Biblical model of baptism is for the candidate’s whole body to be fully immersed under the water. However, the choice to be baptized must be made by the individual themselves, upon hearing the Word of God and choosing to place their faith in Jesus Christ, thus demonstrating their commitment to follow Him all the days of their life. (Matthew 3:11; John 3:23; Acts 2:38-41; 8:34-39; 18:8; 19:1-5; Romans 6:1-4; Galatians 3:24-27)
We Believe the Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God, filled with truth and without error. It is our guide for living lives of holiness, righteousness and obedience. It is God’s special revelation to us that we might have a better understanding of who He is and what He desires from His creation. The Bible should be interpreted literally, grammatically, contextually, and historically. We must not change or alter His Word for any reason. (Deuteronomy 29:29; John 10:35; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:21; 1 Corinthians 2:13)
We Believe the Church, is the body of Christ and the extension of Jesus Christ’s character, attitude, behavior and mission in our world today. Jesus is the true head of the Church. All who have put their faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior, are members of the Church. The Church is responsible to represent Jesus Christ in the world through godly living and evangelism. The Church is called to be a witness and testimony to the goodness of God. All believers are commanded to participate in two ordinances, baptism by immersion and the Lord’s Supper. (Matthew 26:26-29; 28:18-20; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 1:22-23; 2:19-22; 3:6-10; 4:11-13; 5:23-27; Colossians 1:18; 1 Thessalonians 2:14; Hebrews 10:25; 1 Peter 2:9-10; 1 John 4:17)
We Believe God gives gifts to both men and women to build up His Church. Gifts are also given for the benefit of the ministry of the Church in advancing God’s Kingdom in this world. Most significantly, that we might bring glory to God through using our gifts in these ways. (John 15:1-8; Romans 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; 14:12; Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Peter 4:10-11)
We Believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Rejection of one’s biological sex is a rejection of the way that God intended for that person to reflect God’s image. We also hold that the term “marriage” has only one meaning, which is the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Genesis 2:18-25). We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other (1 Corinthians 6:18; 7:2-5; Hebrews 13:4). We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. We also believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, and use of pornography) is sinful and offensive to God (Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10). We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of the Clarion Church of Christ as the local Body of Christ, and to provide a Biblical role model to the church’s members and the community, it is imperative that all persons employed by the Clarion Church of Christ in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, agree to and abide by this Statement on Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality. (Matthew 5:16; Philippians 2:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:22)
We Believe that all human life is sacred and created by God in His image. Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death. We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life. (Genesis 1:27; 2:7; Psalm 139; Jeremiah 22:3; Matthew 6:25-26; Romans 13:9)
