What is truth? This is a question that has been floating around for thousands of years. Here is how some have answered the question:
- “Truth is the opposite of lies.”
- “Truth is to tell the truth.”
- “Truth differs from person to person.”
- “Truth is what we believe to be truth.”
- “I don’t believe that there’s one truth. There’s so many different people, and there are so many different ways you can look at things. I don’t see how there could just be one truth.”
As Jesus spoke about truth, I imagine Pilates eyes may have been rolling… because after Jesus finishes speaking, Pilate asks, “What is truth?” At this point, I am amazed. Not that Pilate asked the question, but that he asked, of all people, Jesus…the One who could have answered the question better than anyone else. After asking, Pilate turns and leaves...not waiting for an answer.
I believe the issue of truth is truly one of the greatest mysteries out there. People have been searching for years to find an answer to this question. So, I being one who chooses to side with Jesus and His standards, choose to believe that truth is found in Him... that He is truth. In John 14:6, Jesus says,
“I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.”
This summer, we will be focusing on the issue of truth. We will do this in a couple of ways. First, we will be examining Jesus’ truth statements. You know…where Jesus is making a speech and somewhere in the midst of it He says these words: “I tell you the truth…” (Verily, verily for our King James readers). Jesus said it too many times to cover in one summer, but we will look closely at a few of them.
Second, we will be offering a great opportunity for study, fellowship & discussion in going through Focus on the Family’s, Truth Project. It is a 12 week video series that looks deeply into the reality of truth. I have been through it once myself, and it is a very powerful tool. You will be greatly blessed and benefited to take part in this journey.
There is too much deception and false thinking going on in our world and it has even infiltrated the church, worldwide. It is time to stand up for what is right and for what is true. Let’s pray for God’s standard of truth to be the measure we stand by as a guide to everyday life.
Remember, I’m praying for you,
we’re all in this together.
