During one of the first elders meetings I went to, when we first got to Clarion, I asked the elders a question. They didn't have an answer. A year and a half later, this question keeps going through my mind. The question is: What "need" is there in our community that is not being met that could be met by our church family? This may be a question you have pondered as well. There's not always an easy answer to that question. I would guess in nearly every community in the city, town or country, there are such needs. I'm willing to bet that there are different groups and organizations that help with many of those needs as well. Yet, when was the last time anyone asked the question, "which need is still out there, not being met?"
A few months back, I was out for a drive in the country praying about and pondering this question. The following verse from James popped into my head... Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. (James 1:27)
So I spent time thinking and praying about this passage. The three items that stood out to me from this passage were the orphans, the widows and the world. So I started playing with the words and the letters and came up with - W.O.W. I know, very impressive. I began thinking, we need a W.O.W. team, whose main ministry is looking after Widows & Orphans and keeping oneself in check by avoiding the corruption of the World. So now the prayer continues to see how the Lord will lead us to meet this particular need in our community.
We certainly have many widows who could use a visit, a ride to a doctor's appointment or grocery store, someone to pick up meds at the pharmacy, someone to pray with them and for them. We also have many youth that I would consider to be "spiritual orphans", since many of the parents do not have a relationship with Jesus. We see lots of kids coming to church programs and the majority of these kids have no family connection within the church at all. They need someone praying for them, sending a note of encournagment, praying for their parents, mentoring them, etc...
The final aspect has more to do with personal integrity and self-control. Keeping oneself from being polluted by the world and its ways. Not allowing the world to dictate what is "right & wrong", but allowing God's Word to define such things. The battle rages on between the "Word" and the "world" all the time. And I know, that it often appears that the world is winning, but the promise of God is that the Word of the Lord stands forever. (1 Peter 1:24-25)
Please be in prayer with us in regards to what may develop out of this. I am excited about what the Lord will accomplish if we are able to find individuals who are willing to commit to such a task. It is certainly a worthwhile investment, and the Lord Himself considers it to be pure and faultless, according to James 1:27. Maybe you are looking for your own W.O.W. idea. Seek God's counsel in prayer, be persitent and at the same time remain patient. When the time is right, He will open the door and let you know.
Remember, I'm praying for you... we're all in this together.
